A lot of people who have tiny houses prefer to stay off the grid, meaning that they might use solar panels, wind power or some other form of power inside of their homes rather than hooking up to an electrical service. Even though being off the grid can have its perks, this does not mean that it is necessarily the right choice for you and your tiny house. These are a few signs that you should consider working with a good electrician so that you can go on-grid with your tiny home.
1. You Live in an Area Where Power is Easily Available
For one thing, one reason why some people do not use regular power in their tiny houses is because they don't really have the option to do so. They might have their tiny houses parked on a piece of rural land that is far away from the nearest electrical pole, for example. In these situations, it can be cost prohibitive or impossible to even have regular power through the grid. In these situations, it can make a lot of sense to come up with an off-the-grid option. If you don't live in a rural area and have access to your local power company's utility lines, however, you could find that it's the better option for you.
2. You Use a Lot of Power
Some people use a lot more power than others. Of course, in a tiny house, you probably will not be using as much power for heating, cooling and other similar things as you would in a more traditionally sized house. However, you may still require a lot of power, such as if you want to be able to run a television, video game console, computer and more. For someone who uses more power, being connected to the electrical grid can be the better choice, since you will not have to worry about running out of the very limited amount that some off-grid people can find themselves with.
3. You're Not Planning on Moving
Some tiny houses are designed to be moved, and some people enjoy moving them around and traveling to new places. If this is the case for you, then it might not be worth it to spend the money to hook your tiny house up to the electrical grid. If you are planning on staying in the same place for a while -- or forever -- then you might find that going on-grid is your best choice.
